Meet Alonso

Alonso Duarte, PhD

I am a  proud father, devoted husband, caring son, and supportive brother. My journey to where I am today has been marked by resilience, determination, and a deep-rooted commitment to  community.

Originally from Mexico, I immigrated to the United States during my senior year of high school. The language barrier posed significant challenges as I navigated the complexities of a new educational system. While my mother dedicated herself to our home, my father, a former university professor with an advanced degree in biochemistry, faced the disheartening reality of having his credentials unrecognized in this country. His academic achievements, once celebrated, were overshadowed by the economic necessity of taking on jobs as a newspaper and Yellow Pages delivery person, and eventually as a janitor within the biochemical industry.

My three siblings and I rallied together to support our family. My older brother and I took on after-school jobs in retail to contribute to our household income. These early experiences instilled in me a strong work ethic and a profound appreciation for the value of every dollar.

My career in retail spanned several years, during which I cultivated invaluable skills in building relationships and extending a helping hand. Volunteer work became a cornerstone of my life, as I dedicated my time to organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the Fairfield Library's literacy program. Organizing community events and expressing gratitude to teachers through appreciation days became passions of mine.

In 2000, shortly after marrying, I settled in Suisun City. I am blessed with three incredible children. My daughters, the eldest, have successfully completed their education at Crescent Elementary, Crystal Middle School, and Armijo High School. My son followed in their footsteps at Crescent Elementary before attending the Public Safety Academy, and he is now thriving at Early College High School. I have been actively involved in their educational journeys, serving on the PTA at Crescent Elementary and the board of the Crystal Music Boosters.

Through perseverance and dedication, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, a Master of Business Administration in Accounting, and a Doctorate in Management with a specialization in Human Resources and Leadership. Today, I have the privilege of serving as the HR/Fiscal Director for Child Start, Inc., a nonprofit organization committed to early childhood education in Napa and Solano Counties. Additionally, I share my knowledge as an accounting instructor at Solano Community College.

My life's journey has been one of overcoming adversity, embracing opportunities, and giving back to the community that has supported me. I am grateful for the challenges I have faced, as they have shaped me into the person I am today.
